Tuesday Tip: Making Laundry a Little Easier

If you are like me, laundry isn’t your favorite activity. Most of us can’t afford to hire someone else to do it (maybe one of these days!), so this Tuesday we’ve got a few tips to help you to make that necessary task just a little easier.

  • Sort clothing as it comes out of the dryer and have each family member fold their own, assuming they are old enough to do so.
  • Don’t do laundry unless you know you have the time to fold it and put it away too, reducing how long piles of clean clothes stick around.
  • You save electricity (and therefore money) by doing multiple loads of laundry in a row. The residual heat in your dryer from the previous load keeps it from having to work hard to reheat.
  • Paint your laundry room a fun color. Your guests will probably never go in there, so be creative. A cheery laundry room makes it a little easier to do the work!
  • Make sure your clean clothes have a home! If your closets and dressers are full and there is no space to put clean clothes away, it might be time to purge!
  • Use wall space, if available, to hang your ironing board & iron and free up floor space.

Guess it’s time to put my clothes away!

What do you do to make laundry an easy & fun task!

Create a “Homework Zone”

The kids are heading back to school and it’s, unfortunately, time to start thinking about homework again. Before school starts, work with your children to setup a “homework zone,” a place where they can focus on getting their assignments completed with little distraction. Here are some tips in creating your child’s space.

  • First and foremost, let your child help create their space. Having ownership in it will go a long way to using it.
  • Locate an appropriate space in your house. Don’t just think about the obvious desk or kitchen table. Most students sit at a desk for 6-8 hours a day and may need a change of pace after school. Do they have a favorite chair? A beanbag? If they will not be working at a table though, be sure to get a clipboard so they have an appropriate writing surface.
  • Create a supply basket. My suggestion is to go ahead and buy two of most of their school supplies while they are on sale. Make sure it has pencils, crayons, a ruler—whatever is age-appropriate for your child. Having a second set of supplies ensures your student has what they need to do their homework without searching for items. It also prevents them from forgetting to pack those items back in their backpacks when they are finished.
  • Set some boundaries. Make it clear that the “homework zone” is only to be used for homework (and reading!).

We at Taylor Home Solutions wish everyone a safe, fun, and successful school year!

Tuesday Tip: Use a Doormat

Using a doormat can reduce the amount of soil and allergens that can be tracked into your home and onto your carpet.  Make sure you have one at each doorway in your house for family and guests to wipe their feet on when they enter.  It is especially important at the garage door to keep oils and other harsh products found in a garage off of your carpet and other flooring.

Not only can you have outdoor mats, but ones just inside the door are helpful too.  And those can be vacuumed, and even laundered.

Additionally, it is helpful to have a shoe rack of some kind inside to prevent people from tracking additional dirt across your flooring.  Check out this earlier post for some ways to store shoes!

If your carpets are already showing some signs of soil in high traffic areas, give us a call at (615) 280-0232 and we’ll get them looking great again.

Gym Bag Essentials

This week, I am co-authoring this blog post with my friend Allyson with AllyFitness. So enjoy the creative collision as the world of simple living meets the world of fitness!

How many excuses can you come up with to avoid working out? Does not having enough time find itself at the top of that list? Today’s post gets you one step closer to having that time to get fit and healthy. It may seem silly to think about what you need in your gym bag, but having it packed properly and ready to go with you is important in making that workout experience positive and can save you time getting out of the house.

First things first – the bag. Make sure you have a gym bag that works the way you need it to. The best bag will have a separate compartment for shoes and sweaty clothes. If yours doesn’t, keep a plastic bag for those items on hand.

Here is a list of what we recommend you pack in your bag:

A pre-workout snack – like a banana, apple, string cheese, or small yogurt—is good to have on hand. Energy bars work, but real food is always better. Lara Bars or Luna Bars are good pre-workout snacks as well.

You’ll need a water bottle to stay hydrated.  BPA-free or stainless steel are the safest for you.

Pack a towel for wiping the sweat off of you if your gym does not provide them.

MP3 player or Ipod – You need motivating music. Allyson doesn’t recommend reading while doing your cardio. It keeps you from getting to the intensity needed. If you like to catch up on reading when at the gym, get your books in mp3 format.

Personal hygiene items – Spa sandals for the shower, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, face lotion (Philosophy makes a three in one – shampoo, conditioner and body wash that rocks) and deodorant for sure. Don’t forget the toothbrush, lip balm, and hand sanitizer. To keep all of those things from rolling around in your bag, make sure to keep them contained in an appropriate toiletry kit like these.

Also recommended is having a dry pair of socks, “post workout” shoes that are cool and comfortable, and fresh underwear in case you don’t have time for a shower.

Finally, you should never go to the gym without a plan. Allyson recommends the BodyMinder exercise journal. It helps you set short and long term goals and plan workouts accordingly.

AllyFitness provides personal training solutions for real people. AllyFitness offers:

  • Training at your convenience and around your schedule, whether you are just getting started, or need to “kick it up a notch”.

Tuesday Tip: Keepsake Boxes

We all have things we value and want to hold onto and there’s nothing wrong with that!  I suggest everyone invest in keepsake boxes for each family member.  Jeff and I each have one for those things that are special to us that we want to keep.

What’s in mine?  A few special birthday/anniversary cards, a purple plastic tiara from a trip with friends to see the Miss America pageant, a few special wedding invitations, etc.  I actually have two boxes.  In my last job I was the director of a community center, so I have a separate box for my time there.  I worked with kids, so I have a lot of drawings, photos, and notes to cherish.

When selecting a box, consider the following:

  • How much to you think you’ll want the box to hold?  This will determine the size of what you need.  If mine fills up, I take the time to revisit what’s in it to see if it still holds the same value as it did when I put it in there.
  • What will you be storing in it?  If you think you’ll have paper and photos, be sure it’s acid-free and is useful for “archival” purposes to preserve your memories.
  • Where will you keep it?  This might determine what it looks like.  There are so many different, beautiful storage containers/boxes that can be considered decor!

There’s nothing wrong with holding onto special, sentimental items.  Just remember to keep them stored appropriately, so you can cherish them for years to come!

Why Hire A Professional Carpet Cleaner?

You have several choices when it comes to cleaning your carpet. Namely, hiring a professional or doing it yourself. Shaw Floors says “Professional carpet cleaners are a great choice for your floor. Their cleaning equipment has more extraction power than the rental units available to individuals, and the carpet should dry more quickly. True professionals also understand the equipment, know the proper cleaning agents for the situation at hand, and recognize the differences in fibers and carpet construction.”

Other reasons to hire a professional:

  • Most carpet warranties require that your carpet be professionally cleaned every 18-24 months.
  • When you rent a cleaning machine you risk using excess detergent or water, potentially damaging your carpet.
  • A professional can clean your carpet in a fraction of the time that it would take for you to do it yourself.
  • A professional also knows how to adjust their cleaning methods depending on the carpet type.

Taylor Home Solutions uses a “hot water extraction” method of cleaning that is recommended by most carpet manufacturers. Hot water extraction, also known as “steam cleaning,” uses hot water and solutions to loosen and extract dirt and allergens from your carpet.  Before the hot water extraction begins, we use a pretreament to help emulsify the soil in the backing of your carpet and break down the stains in the fibers.  Additionally, we use a deep scrub method to bring the soil to the surface of the carpet for complete extraction.

Call us at (615) 280-0232 with your carpet cleaning questions and to set an appointment!
