Tip #1: Leave ‘em at the doorstep.
Make it part of your daily routine to start taking your shoes off as you enter the house. Get a small shoe rack to keep in your garage or some kind of bin for storing shoes. Shoes track in everything from the great outdoors (not to mention you can’t count on all doormats to get the grime off dirty shoes). You can always slide on some comfortable bunny slippers while inside your house if that’s your thing-or better yet, go barefoot! Your feet and your carpet will thank you.

Tip #2: Vacuum … and then vacuum again.
For heavy-traffic areas, make sure you vacuum at least two times a week. Though the excitement typically leaves people’s faces when you tell them to vacuum that often, your vacuum truly is the best thing for preserving the life of your carpet. Be sure to perform routine tune-ups on your vacuum for maximum efficiency, including the following:

• Change the bag before it gets full.
• Remove fibers trapped in the vacuum brushes.
• Check the hose to make sure nothing is blocking the airflow before turning on the vacuum.  A good quality vacuum that is properly maintained works harder to lift excess dirt, dust, and pet dander from heavily soiled areas.

Tip #3: Arm yourself with the proper cleaning supplies.
Once that panicky “Oh no!” response passes after you’ve just found a big spill or stain on your carpet, it’s time to bring in the cleaning reinforcements. Before you put down any kind of liquid or dry carpet cleaner, make sure you use a dampened, lint-free cloth to blot the stain. If you scrub right away, it will push the spill into the carpet fibers. Always follow the recommendations (usually listed on the carpet cleaner bottle) to put the cleaner on the spot and let it set for a few minutes. Use a plastic scraper to lift off as much cleaner as possible, blot away the rest, and finish the job using a soft-bristle brush to shape the carpet fibers back into their previous condition. If you have aggravating pet urine stains and odors, use an enzyme cleaner to neutralize acids and ammonia found in pet waste. To neutralize other carpet odors, try using dish detergent or vinegar in the problem areas.

Tip #4: Keep the sunshine outside.
Closing the blinds or curtains isn’t just helpful to keep your neighbors from seeing you in those bunny slippers. It can help preserve the life of your carpet as well! Did you know that UV rays from the sun could cause carpets to age (especially with darker carpet colors)? If you plan to be gone most of the day, keep your blinds and curtains closed to help protect your carpet.

Tip #5: Brush your pets regularly.
Is it any coincidence that the word “pet” appears in carpet? Pet hair and dander can quickly join the party with the rest of the dirt and grime in your carpet. Though you can’t stop pets from shedding hair, you can be proactive by brushing your pets regularly (preferably outside or in an area with bare floors for easy cleanup) to help combat the amount of hair that gets embedded in your carpet fibers.

Our flat rate per room pricing includes pretreatment, deep scrub, hot water extraction and a deodorizer. Any other services beyond that are optional and do not affect the appearance of your carpet. All pricing for our carpet cleaning and duct cleaning is listed on our website.

While we never mind doing an estimate for carpet or duct cleaning, we’ve really eliminated the need for it. Because of our pricing structure, our customers can figure out exactly what they will be charged before we even arrive at their home. We do, however, write up the work when we arrive and customers sign to approve it before we begin any cleaning.

BEFORE

Here’s what we did. We pulled everything out! We replaced all the random shelves and drawers with 2 four foot wire shelves. That alone created tons more room. We installed the shelves 30″ off the floor so we can eventually get a file cabinet to put in the closet. We even left room for it! Then I sorted through everything and only put things back in that really needed to be in there. One of the new shelves is for craft items and one for office items. We also got rid of two boxes full of things for Goodwill and a trash bag full of trash.

AFTER

We managed to do the whole project for about $50. That included the shelves and the paper organizer. We reused many of the containers we already had.

Not bad for a couple hours worth of work.

A recent small business report shared a pretty staggering statistic that 80% of small businesses fail in their first year. We are happy to report that we’ve reached that first year and are still going strong! A year ago February 13th we served our first Taylor Home Solutions customer and it’s been a wild ride ever since.

1/4 cup of dish soap
2 cups of vinegar
1 cup of lemon juice
2 cups of water

First, let me say… it smelled awful. But I’m confident that it was the type of dish soap I used. If you use an all natural, unscented dish soap it should be just fine.  And any scent dissipates pretty quickly anyway.

Here are a few things I would suggest. Spray it, don’t dump it.  I used a bucket to mix mine and just poured a little on the floor at a time. A spray bottle or a spray mop that allows you to add your own cleaner would be perfect.  Someone can buy me this one for my birthday! Having too much on the floor results in a little extra soapiness. Second, add the soap to the water, not the water to the soap.  Also keeps the suds down.  After I got a little too much on the floor, I just took a damp cloth to it to get the remainder back up. But, if used properly, this solutions doesn’t have to be rinsed.

This floor cleaner worked really well on our vinyl floors. I didn’t get to finish cleaning downstairs and could see exactly where I left off. Not sure if that says how well it works or how dirty my floors were.

With the holidays approaching, we all feel that time crunch.  I’ve compiled a list of ways that we’ve kept up with what needed to be accomplished this year.  My hope is that you can use some of these tactics to remain calm and enjoy the pace.  After all, the holidays should be about spending time with family and service to others– not getting to the mall and realizing you forgot your wallet.

Keep a notepad handy! I’m pretty famous for remembering what I need to do for the business while I’m at my job and vice versa.  I keep a notepad in my planner, which I carry everywhere I go (I love technology, but love the book more!).  When I’m at work and remember I need to email the payroll figures out, I write it down on my notepad so I can get it out of my head and focus on what I need to do at work  When I get home, I pull out the list and address anything I need to then.  I LOVE LISTS!

Give yourself time to brainstorm. Take five minutes and list (told you I love them!) everything you need to do on a particular day.  Prioritize by need.  Or if you are working on a project, list out the steps.  When we were starting the business, we had so many tasks to do in a very particular order.  I finally listed each “to do” on its own sticky note and kept moving them around until I had it right.  For example, we couldn’t order business cards until we had the phone set up.  Having them on sticky notes made rearranging tasks a breeze.

Keep a great calendar. In addition to just writing appointments down in my planner, I try to keep detailed notes, especially in Outlook.  The more details you have, the easier it will be to arrive on time and prepared.  Around the holidays, our calendars fill quickly.  I typically start my week reviewing my calendar and making sure I have everything in it that is happening.

Most of all just give yourself time to breathe and time to have fun!  We have been so blessed by starting this business this year and are grateful for the support of our family, friends, and customers have given us through our journey.  We look forward to our entering a second year of business!
